Isospectral Domains in Euclidean 3-Space

The question as to whether the shape of a drum can be heard has existed for around fifty years. The simple answer is ‘no’ as shown through the construction of isospectral domains. Isospectral domains are non-isometric domains that display the same spectra of frequencies of sound. These frequencies, deduced from the eigenvalues of the Laplacian, are determined by solving the wave equation in a d...

Finite geometries and diffractive orbits in isospectral billiards

Several examples of pairs of isospectral planar domains have been produced in the two-dimensional Euclidean space by various methods. We show that all these examples rely on the symmetry between points and blocks in finite projective spaces; from the properties of these spaces, one can derive a relation between Green functions as well as a relation between diffractive orbits in isospectral bill...

Compact isospectral sets of plane domains.

Any isospectral family of two-dimensional Euclidean domains is shown to be compact in the C(infinity) topology. Previously Melrose, using heat invariants, was able to establish the C(infinity) compactness of the curvature of the boundary curves. The additional ingredient used in this paper to obtain the compactness of the domains is the behavior of the determinant of the Laplacian near the boun...

Inverse Spectral Problems in Rectangular Domains

We consider the Schrödinger operator − + q in domains of the form R= x ∈ n 0 ≤ xi ≤ ai i = 1 n with either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions on the faces of R, and study the constraints on q imposed by fixing the spectrum of − + q with these boundary conditions. We work in the space of potentials, q, which become real-analytic on n when they are extended evenly across the coordinate plan...

We systematically formulate a hierarchy of isospectral Hamiltonians in onedimensional supersymmetric quantum mechanics on an interval and on a circle, in which two successive Hamiltonians form N = 2 supersymmetry. We find that boundary conditions compatible with supersymmetry are severely restricted. In the case of an interval, a hierarchy of, at most, three isospectral Hamiltonians is possible...
